“What are you doing here?” Violet whispers. Catherine doesn’t speak, only stares. Jamie’s features mirror themselves in his sister; the same golden blonde hair, clear green eyes, high cheekbones.

“Catherine, what the hell are you doing here?” Violet interrupts her thoughts once again, her eyes now filled with contempt.

“I just…I wanted to see you. To see you and Jamie.”

Something in Violet’s eyes changes. Her body tenses; she falters before shutting down completely. “Get out.”

Catherine stares at her again. “Excuse me?”

“Get the fuck out of my house.”

Catherine stumbles out of the building before anyone has the chance to call security, and immediately finds herself staring right at Monica Davenport, the heiress herself. The other girl nearly drops her phone, then hurries in the opposite direction.

She finds herself shivering despite the cold and clutches her arms to her chest. The last time she saw Monica was when she handed her a wedding invitation, the smugness apparent on her face. She was going to marry Jamie Mitchell, and that was the end of that. No more sideways glances at parties; no more late night phone calls.

By the time she gets home, the news has already spread like wildfire. The Bennetts take it upon themselves to inform as many as they can, and Catherine has the endless calls on her phone to prove it. Her mind feels oddly fractured, as though she were trying to force together mismatched puzzle pieces, crushing them at the tips.

When she spots Rachel sitting on her porch, grief written across her face, she nearly crumbles. Her best friend lets out a ragged breath, then suddenly buckles, sobs escaping her at such a rate that Catherine thought she might collapse. “Rachel…” She hadn’t expected this. She knew her friend was hurt, knew it well, but the intensity of Rachel’s emotion blew her away. Then came the three words that left her reeling.

“Cat, Jamie’s dead.”

Maddie flings items about her room, searching desperately for the letter. She knows she has it; knows it needs to be burned three times over. “She’s back.” she mutters furiously into her phone, then sends it crashing against the wall.

Rachel spots Catherine leaving the psychiatry center. She remembers the look on her long-lost friend’s face- furtive, frightened, as though she knows the whole city is waiting for her. And it is.
